Stepping Stones
I’m a published author!
When The Telling Room announced they were looking for authors age 6 to 11 for their new publication, Stepping Stones, I was really excited! I love writing. But I had never published anything!
I decided to submit two pieces, one about a lost kitty, and the other about a baby octopus. They both got published! My friend, Attean, also had a story published.
I got to go to a party in Deering Oaks park to honor all the young authors. Some of the authors signed each others books. Then some authors read parts of their writing to the whole audience. I’m glad I didn’t have to read mine! We took a photo of all the authors on stage together.
I’m so excited that my writing got published, and I can’t wait to write more in the future!

Stepping Stones is a youth-powered, youth-centered, youth-led, and youth-authored collection of literary fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for teachers, librarians, students, and all of us. This brand-new kind of anthology shines a light on the more than 200 youngest writers, ages 6 to 11, selected from over 45 towns throughout Maine. We honor the voices of the newest and youngest writers among us, because for years their teachers have asked us: Where are the books of my students’ writing? Can’t my students complete all the steps of becoming an author and be published, too? And don’t their stories matter just as much as those by the adult authors who write the books meant for them? We believe that a new or young writer is a writer whose voice deserves to be heard as much as, or more, than the older writers who they read. Their writing is inventive and honest, offering insights only they can offer to the world. We invite you to join us and follow along the stepping stones that have become, in this book, a force of literary nature that might leave you breathless or shaking in your boots.
At The Telling Room, we empower youth through writing and share their voices with the world. As a literary arts education organization focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for success both now and in the future.
Our fun, innovative writing and publishing programs support and encourage young people in the art of writing and self-expression. We provide school-based and afterschool writing enrichment programs year-round and statewide, offer professional development for educators, host acclaimed writers to give public readings and work with students, publish bestselling anthologies of student work, and carry out community-wide writing projects and events.
